Flower Mound Wrestling - a myriad of feelings and viewpoints
I'm still unsure what to think of the big story of the alleged hazing that took place at a party for the Flower Mound wrestling team. Where did some of the accused cross the line into something illegal?
When I first heard this story, I was mad. Really mad. Mad at the people who were reported to have done this. Mad at the coach(es) and parent(s) who were at the party, but who apparently did little or nothing. Even mad at those who claimed to be victims. It just seems so stupid that we're dealing with something like this in this day and age.
As the days went on, and as news media coverage increased (including three stories by my TV newsroom), I still don't have much sense of direction for my feelings. I don't really believe the disbelieving parents of those accused when they say it was just boys being boys. I think they're just grand-standing for their kids, which is natural. I'm not sure if I totally believe the victims either. I do believe the police conducted a fair investigation, and I do believe they took great pains to make sure the charges handed out reflect their view of what happened. But will a jury buy the fact that kids committed a crime? I've read a couple of the police arrest affadavits, and I'm not so sure if these charges will get guilty verdicts.
This story has the potential to tear apart an important community within our community.

You should be mad, but not at the parents or coach(es) attending the party. It's unfortunate that you believe the police did a thorough investigation. Several witnesses were brought to the police station where the police refused to interview them. This is a fair investigation?
It's interesting how the police managed to leave out that the father of one of the so-called victims was present during the party. He also took his so called "extremely injured" child to a second pool party immediately following the wrestling party. It wasn't until AFTER the second party (which lasted well into the late evening) that the father decided to take his child to an Urgent Care facility where he was fine.
Good investigation? hah!
Did the police interview anyone at the second party to find out what the condition of the victim was during that second party? Nope. They wouldn't even take eye-witness statements from that party.
All it took was greed by this parent seeking the deep pockets of anyone they could get. What parent goes directly to every media source before talking to other parents to find out what happened to their child? (If he was injured) If I thought my child was hurt at a party, I would have approached any or all adults at the party. Not so by this parent.
Instead, he went directly to a civil attorney, a so-called specialist in hazing, and who knew how to manipulate the media to create hysteria.
Anybody who has formed an opinion based on the salacious media reporting demonstrates either ignorance or gullibility.
