Your turn: Time to play "what if?"

Here's something to think about, and then write about. It only works if you post.

Answer the following question:

What if ... in 1996 and 1997 Lori DeLuca and a few like-minded allies hadn't stepped forward to protest the people and policies that led to Flower Mound's years-long growth spurt, and what if they hadn't found the political strength to muster what turned out to be a bloodless coup d'etat?

What would Flower Mound look like today? The best answers will include specific examples.

In my opinion, Flower Mound would be an even better place to live if we enjoyed a larger population. We certainly have the geographic area to support more residents. But Voters United somehow viewed more houses as a negative.

Benefits to a larger population are numerous. A larger diversity of retailers would be attracted to our town. We could afford more or better parks and libraries. The public burden of all town government duties would be shared by more households. We might even attract our own hospital rather than depending on services at Lewisville and Grapevine.

It seems outrageous that landowners on the western half of Flower Mound are unable to effectively develop their property. Trying to preserve a rural image seems ludicrous for a town a few miles north of a world class airport. By forcing development to leapfrog our key geographic position in the metroplex, we have increased the sprawl and long commutes of thousands. And for what? So a handful of residents in western Flower Mound can still see the cowpastures they don't own and have no right to preserve.
