A warning to the trash collectors this week

If you read this site regularly, you know I love the really little slices of life here in Flower Mound. Here are a couple of posts on trash:

First, a little Memorial Day spring cleaning around the house this morning, and I just added about 10 pounds to my recycle bin.

In the bin are 3 years of old phone books that are being sent away. I saved all the current phone books, which still leaves me with 8 or 9. With both Verizon and AT&T (old SBC) throwing 3 or 4 books a year on the lawn, and with a handful of smaller publishers adding to the mix, that's a lot of paper.

Questions:

  • Is the phone book business that lucrative to support all these different competitors?

  • Are you still using phone books today, or are you looking up numbers on the web?

See, I told you some of these posts are really little.

I was doing some cleaning around my house tonight and had the exact same questions about phone books. We don't use them at all. If these companies would make a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM with all the numbers and ads (perhaps interactive with web links) - I'd probably use it a lot.

Wow that pic looks like my bin last weekend. Did the same thing and trashed the old ones after receiving the new ones on my door step. And no, I now rarely open them due to the wealth of info on the web - both business and personal phone numbers are reachable on the web.

My phone books go straight from the front porch to the recycle bin.

I think the "opt out" idea above is a great one! We keep the current books "just in case" and I think I did use a local one recently to find a children's piano teacher in this area (no luck) but no... we use the 'net to look up numbers and addresses!

I've heard that yellow pages advertising is very expensive - I wonder how much return businesses get for their advertising dollar with it? There must be a few people out there without internet access, right?

My fingers do their walking on the keyboard almost always now, too. I think I broke out the phone book a couple of months ago looking for the number of a specific business that I couldn't find online.

Used a payphone lately?

Oh my! We just got our SECOND Verizon Fort Worth / Arlington Yellow Pages yesterday. Our whole street received them... and it's the very same one we got a few weeks ago!! What a waste! Wonder how that happened.

You must've touched a nerve... you say this is a little post and yet it's got the most comments!!
