Is the new Kroger open?
Haven't stepped on the property yet, and I haven't seen any ads, but when we drove by the new Kroger (3040/Morriss) the other day, it sure looked open.
Is it open, and has anyone gone in? Thoughts, opinions, reviews?
One thing's sure to happen: Between the new Kroger, and the nearby Tom Thumb/Albertsons duo a mile away, there's sure to be a lot of attention on prices. I would expect you'll see a lot more items on sale, and for lower prices. At least for a little while. It's a good time to be a grocery shopper in southern Flower Mound.

It opened 8:00 Sunday. My wife made a brief trip today (Monday) and said it is arranged differently than other Krogers she has shopped. It appears to have a higher mix of specialty foods.
I went in Sunday afternoon and it was packed with people. Maybe it's just me, but the carts seem larger than usual... but then maybe it was the weight from my 3yo making it hard to steer?
There was way too much of a fishy smell for my tastes - there is a sushi bar near the front, then I smelled it again by the seafood section but maybe it was demos causing it, I didn't see.
Nice looking store, but we were in a hurry so I didn't browse. My main concern was the lines at check-out, but they were smart and had all the lanes open so the wait was short. I am planning to go there again tomorrow.
Flower Mound maintains it's position as "Grocery Store Capitol of the World."
My wife and I went there on Saturday for their Open House. We had gotten a letter a few days before with a $10 off coupon announcing the opening. Since we have been waiting for close to 4 years for this store to open there wasn't any way we were going to miss the big day.
They were giving away free product samples like Nolan Ryan hamburgers, Blue Bell, Boars Head (too bad TT pulled that out of their stores) and others. The store itself is probably the nicest grocery store I've ever been in and working in the CPG industry, I've been in a lot. The store is very well lit, has nice wide aisles, and very nice end caps. The produce looked great too, better than the over hyped Sprouts. I went to the store again on Monday and they had all of the check outs open… each with its own sacker. This store also has self checkouts for those quick trips, something the TT has yet to embrace. It will be interesting to see how this store does over the next several months from a customer service stand point. Once the newness wears off some things are bound to change.
Unfortunately or fortunately, this store will help contribute to the demise of the Albertsons in town. I wouldn't be surprised if it is already on the list of stores slated to be closed by CVS/Supervalu. Our family was loyal to TT until the Safeway influence became too much and the prices got to high. After that we shifted to the Albertsons due to a lack of options. I got to the point where I was even afraid to look at the baskets at Albertsons for the fear that I might catch something.
We went to the Grand Opening on Sunday afternoon and it was packed. I LOVED that they have a dedicated KOSHER section. But I didn't see any challot there. I'm eager to see if they are genuinely interested in properly stocking this section... i.e. Passover foods at Passover, etc.. The High Holy Days are right around the corner, too!
What's up with the labels on the aisles.....since when did we start calling it Hispanic food instead of Mexican food???
It was a hoot...I'm walking down the aisle....there is the sign for Chinese food, Kosher food, Italian food....and Hispanic food......Have I missed something?
But....I LOVED THE STORE!!!
I made a stop at Tom Thumb around 5:30 pm and it was a ghost town! I was amazed. I'm not surprised the new store would impact them, but if what I saw tonight is a true indicator they won't be able to make it without taking some very bold steps to be competitive.
